Not Your Average Hole In The Ground

Deep within the misty fields of British Columbia’s Fraser Valley lies a hidden sanctuary that redefines modern luxury. The Under Hill Suite at the Hazelnut Inn is the physical manifestation of literary nostalgia. It is meticulously crafted for adults who want to escape the everyday.

The architectural style is brilliantly specific. It postulates a world where the subterranean comforts of Tolkien’s Third Age marry the gentle, watercolour whimsy of Beatrix Potter’s English countryside. Built directly beneath the sculpted roots of a massive, ancient tree, the suite evokes a sense of timeless wonder.

Leaving The Real World At The Gate

The journey into this fantasy realm begins outside a secluded courtyard. Pass through a hand-crafted moon gate — a threshold that deliberately shuts out the hum of the modern world — and step inside to find a secret garden alive with the gentle murmur of a trickling waterfall.

As you approach the heavy, arched entryway, look up. Observant fantasy enthusiasts will spot a phonetic inscription carved into the lintel above the door declaring that this hole in the ground is pure comfort.

Enjoy The Comforts Of A Living Story

An atmosphere of pure pastoral elegance permeates the suite. Hand-painted wallpaper, warm Tiffany lamps, and bespoke ironwork bathed in amber light evoke the timeless charm of England’s Lake District. Overhead, a massive root system twists across the ceiling to anchor the room’s storybook aesthetic.

Every element of the interior prioritizes tactile luxury. A plush king-size bed rests within a recessed alcove, offering a cozy sleeping chamber. Nearby, a massive soaking tub for two appears carved directly from the earth, providing a grounding, relaxing experience.

Where Fantasy Meets Function

Enchantment does not mean inconvenience. Despite the profound sense of seclusion, modern conveniences are fully present but entirely hidden from view, preserving the flawless illusion of a timeless retreat.

The entire suite is thoughtfully designed on a single, seamless level. With no stairs to navigate, the magical atmosphere remains effortless to experience for every guest.

Far From Ordinary, But Close To Home

This magical enclave is nestled in the quiet village of Yarrow. Nearby, the rural tranquility of British Columbia unfolds into kilometres of winding riverside forest trails, creating the ultimate backdrop for misty morning walks.

Best of all, this literary escape remains remarkably accessible. It sits just a ninety-minute drive from the urban bustle of downtown Vancouver and a quick fifteen minutes from the Sumas border crossing between the USA and Canada.

The Architecture Of Ink & Stone

Some places are built, while others are dreamed into existence. When we first began sculpting the Hazelnut Inn, my pointing trowel met more than concrete — it met the edges of stories.

We were designing boundaries: lines between a deep interior magic and the modern world scratching at the windowpanes. If you look closely at the North Star Suite’s celestial ceiling and secret-keeping corners, you will feel the distinct influence of the many fantasy worlds I’ve explored through the years.

I’ve always loved reading and I’m particularly fond of Naomi Novik’s work — her fierce, deeply empathetic characters have stayed with me long after the final page. If you are packing your bags for a stay under our stars, here are two of her books that I recommend for your nightstand.

The Perfect Match: A Deadly Education

Our North Star Suite is a sanctuary — a safe harbour with a private garden and a soothing soaker tub. The room’s midnight velvet tones and celestial motifs perfectly mirror the dark weight of Novik’s narrative. But real magic requires contrast; it needs a hint of peril to make the comfort feel earned.

That vital contrast comes alive in the pages of A Deadly Education. The novel introduces the Scholomance: a living, shifting school whose darkness is actively trying to eat its students. Reading it here creates a delicious friction. You can explore those dangerous, monster-filled corridors while safely tucked inside a suite built to shield you from the world. It’s the ultimate luxury: experiencing literary chaos inside a fairytale haven.

The Alternate Path: His Majesty’s Dragon

If dark academia isn’t the escape you're looking for, slide Novik’s His Majesty’s Dragon into your satchel instead.

This story trades claustrophobic danger for historical grandeur and the thrill of the open skies. The suite’s deep ocean hues and sweeping celestial ceiling mirror the endless horizons of Captain Laurence and Temeraire’s journeys. Reading it here feels like charting a course across the stars from the comfort of your own private captain’s quarters.

Each of our suites is a personal invitation to step out of the ordinary and into a story of your own. We built the architecture; we welcome you to bring the ink.

A Time Capsule For Two

At the Hazelnut Inn, we’ve built more than a romantic retreat; we’ve forged a time capsule.

The world outside our gates is a relentless thief of the present, scattering our days into digital noise and to-do-lists. But here, amongst our sculptures and hand-painted flourishes, we have built a vault for something truly precious: your future memories.

As your suite’s heavy timber door closes, time doesn’t just slow down — it loses its authority. Whether it’s the quiet steam rising above a deep soaker tub for two or the flicker of light that catches your partner’s smile below a cathedral ceiling, every detail is an invitation to leave the clocks behind and to craft the kind of memories that stay vivid long after you’ve returned to the world outside.

The vault is open. What will you choose to remember?
