Twelve Years and One Blue Thistle

I am watching the late afternoon sun filter through a crab apple tree. In front of me, a cluster of globe thistles catches the light, their fierce, spiky heads, an impossible purple-blue against the earthy greens of the tree.

To anyone else, these thistles are landscaping. But to me, they are a living promise. When I look at them — as I do nearly every day — the last twelve years vanish, and I am standing once again at the beginning.

Twelve years ago tomorrow, Hailey and I were married. Wanting our celebration to feel entirely like us, we had tucked tiny seeds into the soil of our first garden — watering them, watching them break through the dirt, and grinning like fools when they finally bloomed. They became my favourite wedding flower: a literal piece of the home we were building together, carried in her hands and tucked into my lapel.

When the time came to sell that house, leaving was bittersweet. We were moving on to a daunting, beautiful dream: building the Hazelnut Inn from the ground up.

It was a massive undertaking — a chaotic season of blueprints, dust, and heavy work. But when we packed up our old life, we didn’t leave everything behind. We carefully dug into the garden soil, uprooted our faithful thistle, and brought it with us.

Gardening, like marriage, requires a quiet kind of stubbornness. It’s about anchoring yourselves through shifting seasons, surviving the frost, and trusting that what you have nurtured in the dark will eventually reach for the light. As we declared twelve years ago:

“I love what I know about you and I trust what I do not yet know.”

Today, that same thistle is growing strong. Its roots have claimed new ground, just as Hailey and I have grown into this life we’ve built together — twelve years of shared mischief and of holding fast to each other through every unexpected turn.

Happy anniversary, Hailey. Twelve years later, our love — just like our thistle — is deeply rooted, wonderfully vibrant, and growing stronger every single day!

Celebrating Beatrix Potter Day

Today, we celebrate the birthday of a woman who taught the world that the smallest details often hold the greatest magic. To Beatrix Potter, a garden was never just a patch of earth; it was a theatre of tiny adventures hidden within the curl of a leaf. While she is beloved for her “little books,” her legacy also encompasses England’s Lake District — a landscape she worked to preserve so that the wild, pastoral peace she sketched would remain unbroken for generations.

It was this same naturalist’s eye that guided the creation of our Under Hill Suite. We traded traditional architecture for the organic curves of twisting tree roots and bespoke, hand-painted wallpaper. The result is a sanctuary tucked safely beneath the soil, inviting you to inhabit a world that feels as though it were drawn from Potter’s own ink-and-wash sketches.

Whether you are waking up under our little hill or simply wandering your own garden path today, we hope you find the quiet joy of looking a little closer. In the end, that is her greatest gift: the reminder that there is a whole universe waiting to be discovered, if only we take the time to notice.

Happy Beatrix Potter Day!

Thank You Yarrow!

Yesterday, more than 1,100 of you braved the rain and stood in line for an hour just to take a peek inside our new Copper Crown Suite — and we are deeply humbled by such an incredible turnout!

When we first started sketching the concept for this final suite, we dreamed of creating a fairytale castle come to life. Seeing so many smiling faces walk through those castle doors made every single ounce of hard work worth it. You brought so much warmth, magic, and energy to the inn, completely washing away the rainy weather!

To everyone who came out, patiently waited in line, and shared a kind word: Thank You. We are incredibly grateful for this amazing community and your support. The Copper Crown is officially ready for our summer guests, and we can’t wait to welcome you back for a fairytale escape of your own!
