Chilliwack’s Hobbit House
The Under Hill Suite at the Hazelnut Inn is a nod to the cozy, earth-bound homes of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Shire, blending the architectural DNA of a hobbit’s burrow with a whimsical, storybook aesthetic.
As with Tolkien’s Bag End, the Under Hill is a literal subterranean abode. Inscribed above the door is a phonetic transcription of the phrase “a hole in the ground means comfort,” a playful reference to the opening lines of The Hobbit.
In the Shire, many “smials” were built beneath the roots of old trees and the Under Hill’s defining feature is an organic, hand-sculpted ceiling beneath the twining roots of the ancient tree that sits atop the hill outside. Guests feel as though they are sleeping deep within the earth.
However, the Under Hill is not a slavish reproduction — the aesthetic is Middle-earth with a Beatrix Potter twist. This translates to a home that feels a bit like a “rabbit's burrow” with high-end craftsmanship, including a fireplace surrounded by massive boulders and hand-painted wallpaper.
And, just as Mr. Baggins valued his peace and quiet from the goings-on of the rest of the world, the suite is enclosed within its own private, walled garden. This secret garden includes a trickling waterfall and an outdoor fireplace, evoking the pastoral peace of both the the Shire and Potter’s countryside.
It’s an absolutely whimsical getaway.
Only 79 more days until the Under Hill Suite’s open house! We hope you will join us, June 7th, 2025 for a tour of the Hazelnut Inn’s newest suite.
